WWE CHAMPIONS

WWE CHAMPION: The Rock

WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPION: Chris Jericho

SMACKDOWN WOMEN'S CHAMPION: Natalya

SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso)

SHOW OPENER PROMO

The WWE Champion The Rock comes out to the ring to address his upcoming Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship against Rusev and Roman Reigns this Sunday at Backlash.

The Rock talks about how he's got nothing but love for his blood, Roman Reigns and looks forward to competing with him this Sunday to see if “The Big Dog” can take the torch from “The Brahma Bull” as they proceed to layeth the smacketh down on “The Super Jabroni” Rusev.

Jinder Mahal then interrupts the proceedings to reminisce about the days when Rock and Jinder were on RAW and Jinder would shock the WWE Universe with big victories over The Rock. The Rock joins in on the reminiscing and smiles at the times where he would beat the holy hell out of Jinder and whoop his ass from pillar to post.

The Rock proposes that they lace up their boots and make some new memories with each other right here tonight but Mahal refuses. Instead, Jinder proposes that since he's got a past win over The Rock, and since he beat Randy Orton within an inch of his life last week, Jinder should be the one to challenge The Rock for the WWE Championship.

The SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon arrives on the scene and makes a Six-Man Tag Team Match featuring The Rock's team taking on Jinder Mahal's team. Jinder's case for a WWE Championship could gain clemency if he were able to pin the WWE Champion in this match tonight.

So they've taken this opportunity tonight to issue an open challenge.

LAST WEEK ON SMACKDOWN LIVE: Naomi and Charlotte Flair defeated the team of Natalya and Carmella.

TONIGHT: The SmackDown Women's Champion Natalya is scheduled to go one on one against Becky Lynch!

EARLIER TONIGHT: Becky Lynch bumped into Natalya and asked her if she wouldn't suppose making tonight's scheduled match a title match. Natalya predictably declined. “Negotiator” Becky then continued by proposing that they at least make tonight a Dis-Arm-Her vs Sharpshooter Submission Match. Natalya replies with a hearty laugh and tells Becky that everyone already knows that the superior submission hold is The Sharpshooter and if Becky wants title matches, submission matches or anything else, Becky is going to have to earn those opportunities.

One half of the SmackDown Tag Team Champions, Jimmy Uso calls out The New Day for a promo battle just days before their title match at Backlash. IN THE BACKSTAGE AREA: SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan meets with a person shown off-screen and talks about how he's happy to resign this person and have him back on SmackDown Live once again. After recent events on RAW, Bryan saw firsthand where this person ended up being ranked with RAW officials and Bryan felt this this person earned the right to be ranked way higher than he was. Bryan asks this man whether he prefers to be buried deep in the rankings of RAW's singles title division or if he prefers how things were before.

A somewhat familiar, gruff voice can be heard stating how Bryan has always said that SmackDown Live was the land of opportunity.

THIS PAST SUNDAY NIGHT AT WWE PAYBACK: The New Day of SmackDown Live defeated Cesaro and Sheamus to become the new RAW Tag Team Champions, bringing the RAW Tag Team Titles to SmackDown Live!

SHOW CLOSER PROMO

Dolph Ziggler and Shinsuke Nakamura's ongoing conflict continued in the UK, as “The Showoff” called out “The King of Strong Style” for not yet having a match on SmackDown Live. Nakamura retorted by telling Ziggler that he was ready to show him what he was made of right then and there. A referee rushed to the ring, and it looked like Dolph was going to take him up on the offer for a match. However, Ziggler quickly rescinded and said that they would do this on his terms — at WWE Backlash.

Dolph Ziggler vs Shinsuke Nakamura

PROMO BATTLE WINNER: Shinsuke Nakamura

MATCH #5

Tag Team Match

Breezango (Fandango & Tyler Breeze) vs The Colóns (Primo & Epico Colón)

RESULT: DRAW

Method: Double count out on Breeze and Epico

LAST WEEK ON SMACKDOWN LIVE: John Cena defeated AJ Styles in a promo battle.

SHOW CLOSER PROMO

AJ Styles talks about how much a win over John Cena would do for him this Sunday at Backlash. A win over John Cena is definitely an achievement that earns you a spot at the table when you talk about WWE Title contention and “The Phenomenal One” is looking to put on the show of a lifetime at Backlash.

Baron Corbin interrupts and facetiously asks AJ who won the rivalry between them a few months back and who was the one that eliminated AJ's WrestleMania main event dreams by eliminating him in the Royal Rumble match. Corbin doesn't care to hear from AJ because Corbin already knows the answer. The answer that Corbin really wants to know is why is Styles facing John Cena when Styles was already handily defeated by Corbin. “The Lone Wolf” says that it should be him facing John at Backlash.

Before leaving, Corbin drops a bombshell on AJ and the WWE Universe. He has gone over the heads of SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon and SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan, all the way to the WWE Board of Directors and they agree with Corbin's statements. As a result, in the interest of fairness, Corbin has been added to the John Cena vs AJ Styles match at Backlash this Sunday, making it a Triple Threat Match! The WWE Universe in London showers this revelation with the fiercest of jeers.

Styles agrees with the WWE Universe and is suddenly laid out by Corbin, prompting a brawl.

AJ Styles vs Baron Corbin

PROMO BATTLE RESULT: DRAW/NO CONTEST

BRAWL WINNER: Baron Corbin

IN THE BACKSTAGE AREA: A facetious SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon confronts Baron Corbin and commends him for going over Daniel and Shane's head to the Board of Directors, calling the move very inspiring. So inspiring that Shane took a page out of Baron's book and went over Baron's head.

When Corbin asks Shane what he's talking about, Shane explains that he's not a fan of having two Triple Threat Matches at the Backlash PPV this Sunday and adds that he had already booked Baron in a match on Sunday. So Shane has gone over Corbin's head and made his Triple Threat a Fatal Four-Way Match. It will be John Cena versus “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles versus Baron Corbin versus Sami Zayn! This sends Corbin into an outrage as Shane wishes him the best of luck on Sunday.

MIDDLE CARD PROMO

Nia Jax brings up how the RAW Women's Champion Paige told her last week that she would be glad to take on Nia again for the RAW Women's Championship but then brought up how she wanted to give other “more deserving” Superstars an opportunity first. Nia says that her team...the team that Nia captained last week was victorious over all of Paige's “more deserving” Superstars.

The RAW Women's Champion Paige reiterates how she definitely would not mind making another strong statement by once again tapping out Nia. She adds that Nia wasn't even the one that picked up the fall for their team last week. It was Maryse that pinned Sasha Banks and not Nia.

Nia reveals that she has already met with co-acting RAW General Manager, The Miz, and he agreed with Nia's point of view. So since Paige is so ready to “tap out Nia again”, The Miz has made a championship rematch between them official and it will take place in two weeks at WWE Extreme Rules!
