TONIGHT ON SMACKDOWN LIVE IN PHOENIX: Roman Reigns and Randy Orton will compete in two separate matches as they look to outshine each other leading up to their championship match next week. Who will leave Phoenix tonight with the momentum on their side?

LAST WEEK ON SMACKDOWN LIVE: Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho to retain the WWE United States Championship. Afterwards, Owens attacked Jericho and rammed him into the steel steps.

The WWE United States Champion Kevin Owens once again proclaims that Chris Jericho is finished because of him. He wasn't “The Millennium Man” he claimed to be when he first arrived to the WWE. “The Millennium Man” only lasted 18 or so years. 18 years out of 1,000? Owens calls that pathetic because Owens plans to be the champion forever.

Chris Jericho appears on the scene and informs Kevin Owens that he just competed at an un-televised live event over the weekend where he was victorious in a #1 contender's match and will challenge Owens next week at Backlash! Chris says that Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan are Kevin's guardian angels tonight because they've instituted a no-physicality policy after Kevin's attack last week. However, at Backlash Jericho plans to return the favor twofold!

One loss means nothing according to “The Show Off”. Daniel Bryan coyly asks if Ziggler will still feel that way if Shinsuke beats him in their rematch as he informs Dolph that he'll get his rematch next week at Backlash.

Rowan took glee in delivering a measure of punishment against Harper last week on SmackDown Live, despite losing. Rowan would love nothing more than to exact the punishment that Luke Harper deserves. Shane McMahon makes the rematch between Harper and Rowan at Backlash official right then and there.
