SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon and SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan unveil the new SmackDown Women's Championship. An Eight-Pack Challenge Match is then scheduled for WWE Backlash in two weeks to determine the inaugural WWE SmackDown Women's Champion. The eight who competed at the SummerSlam Kickoff have been chosen as the competitors for this match.

It is revealed that at WWE Backlash, “The Eater of Worlds” Bray Wyatt will meet The Undertaker in a rematch. However, tonight on SmackDown Live “The Dead Man” meets Luke Harper in tonight's main event!

Show Opener Promo

The Director of Operations, Kane, comes out to the ring and talks about how much of a great talent the WWE Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews is and how much of a rising star he is. He reveals that his contract as Director of Operations expired the day after SummerSlam and Kane is now no longer a part of The Authority.

The WWE Champion AJ Styles comes out to celebrate his championship defense with the WWE Universe here in Kansas City. He talks about how things seemed uncertain after he lost two straight non-title bouts to John Cena and Ric Flair. Styles thought that the writing was on the wall and perhaps he wasn't going to get past Cena at SummerSlam. So AJ made SummerSlam a night of redemption for him as he went to battle with Cena, giving every ounce that he had, to retain the WWE Championship. His defense against Cena is his first defense since regaining the WWE Championship at WWE Draft on SmackDown Live two months ago. “The Phenomenal One” ends the segment by saying that he is ready for his next defense and doesn't care who it's against.

Footage is shown of the Eight-Woman Tag Team Match at SummerSlam where Rosa Mendes picked up the victory over her team by picking up a big upset pinfall over Becky Lynch who has since vehemently requested a match against Rosa tonight in Kansas City.

Footage is shown of Dean Ambrose's shockingly brief and crushing defeat at the hands of “The Lone Wolf” Baron Corbin. Many in the WWE Universe have been speculating that this may have been the result of an injury that Ambrose could be suffering from but he reveals that he in fact was injury-free in that match at SummerSlam. He talks about how he heard AJ Styles talking about fighting adversity and ultimately redeeming himself at SummerSlam as the rightful WWE Champion. This has inspired Ambrose. Other WWE Superstars would probably cower and sulk after such a demoralizing defeat but Ambrose is out here to make a challenge. One that would redeem his failures if he is successful. Dean Ambrose is challenging “The Viper” Randy Orton!

The WWE Intercontinental champion Apollo Crews comes out and thanks Kane for bringing out the absolute best in Apollo. His victory at SummerSlam marks his second successful championship defense as he goes into the second month of his reign. Apollo says that he is ready for his next challenger and wishes Dolph Ziggler and Kalisto the best of luck in their #1 contender's match because he knows that he can tear the house down with either Superstar.

“The Rated R Superstar” Edge is interviewed via satellite to address The Miz's challenge from last week. Edge starts off by expressing his sincerest apology to Maryse for inadvertently knocking her down when he attacked The Miz several weeks ago. He has purposely remained off of SmackDown Live television since then as a way for him to pay for his transgression. As far as Miz challenge goes, Edge expresses his disinterest but not because of fear but because he doesn't view The Miz as much of a challenge.

The Miz and Maryse are shown watching this interview backstage as they both don surprised faces at Edge's comments. Edge brings up The Miz's recent rivalry with John Cena and how Miz had a hell of match against John in July and even came out victorious in that match. However, Cena would ultimately defeat Miz in their rematch at Battleground. Edge stipulates that if Miz were to challenge John Cena to a rubber match and win then Edge would certainly accept The Miz's challenge.

He goes on about how Ambrose is a former WWE Champion and one of the toughest and boldest Superstars on the SmacDown Live roster...and Corbin beat him. He explains how he is a man to be feared yet he doesn't think that enough people fear him despite him defeating everybody's precious “Lunatic Fringe”. This brings him to why he's out here. He reveals that after his statement-making victory at SummerSlam, he has been named as the #1 contender by the SmackDown Live officials and will be challenging AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at Backlash.
