The Authority (Triple H, Stephanie McMahon & Kane) come out to kick off SmackDown in Hartford, Connecticut. They say that this is “Authority Country”. They admit that they've been...”re-configuring things” since WrestleMania. They've taken notice of the “supposed” power vacuum left behind by their absence and are here to dispel any notion of such things. The Wyatt Family don't run things around here no matter how much destruction they cause. And The Shield cannot stop them. The Authority still, and will always, run the show. They are interrupted by Mr. McMahon who wants to see Hunter and Stephanie prove their words that some may consider hollow coming off of WrestleMania. Mr. McMahon says that in order to add more stability to things, Shane McMahon will control RAW and SmackDown alongside The Authority. Shane comes out and says that there is someone back there who has something to say to The Authority.

“The World's Strongest Man” Mark Henry comes out and says that he's here on behalf of the WWE locker room and notifies The Authority that ever since The Shield defeated them at WrestleMania, they aren't as feared as they once were. Stephanie gets angry at Henry's audacity to interrupt them and thinks that perhaps an example should be set to demonstrate just how in charge they really are. Henry brings up some of his feats of strengths like bending the unbendable and pulling two tractor trailer. If he can do those things, imagine what damage he could cause to The Authority. Triple H says that they aren't scared and tonight Henry is going to be put in his place as a warning to everyone else in that locker room. The segment ends with Henry proclaiming that he's about to add the greatest edition to the Hall of Pain, “The Game” Triple H!

The New Generation, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are interviewed. At WWE Payback they will face The Shield in the Finals of the WWE Tag Team Championship Tournament. Owens and Zayn say that once they become champions, they will then be the greatest champions on the WWE roster. Together as champions, they will run things in the WWE the way they were meant to be run. They add that with them as the champs, they will elevate the prestige of the WWE Tag Team Championships and the WWE will have no choice but to recognize that the main event should feature them and only them. We will then enter an age where SmackDown and RAW will both be known as the Kevin and Sami (or the Sami and Kevin) Show. Shane McMahon steps in and corrects them by saying that this isn't the Kevin and Sami Show, this is SmackDown and he's got a great idea for tonight's main event. Shane wants to show them firsthand just how tough of a battle he had at WWE 2K17 WrestleMania so tonight, Sami Zayn will take on...The Undertaker!

The Social Outcasts' Curtis Axel calls himself a legend in the making that this company and all of these people can't seem to recognize.

Bray Wyatt cuts a promo and addresses The Authority from earlier tonight. He calls them a shell of their former selves and their power is only an illusion hoisted up by words and sentences. But words and sentences will all fall down when they meet the destruction brought forth by The Wyatt Family. The Authority does not concern nor interest them. The Shield on the other hand is a faction of great interest to Bray. The Shield are the force that brought down The Authority at WrestleMania. And now The Shield may be the force that becomes the WWE Tag Team Champions at Payback. The Shield continue to rise and The Wyatt Family will continue to ease their boots off of their necks because once The Shield reach the pinnacle of their momentum, The Wyatt Family will swoop down, pick them apart and take everything they have left. Then The Wyatt Family will be known as the ultimate force.

Cesaro is with Tyson Kidd when he is interviewed. He talks about his match with Bray Wyatt tonight and The Wyatt Family's issues with The Shield. Frankly, Cesaro doesn't have a dog in this fight. As a matter of fact, Cesaro would love nothing more than to defeat “The Eater of Worlds” tonight and show that Tyson Kidd and Cesaro are a dangerous duo that can take down The Wyatts.

WWE Women's Champion, Charlotte is interviewed alongside one of her opponents at WWE Payback, Sasha Banks. While they remain friends in the formal form, they have been entreched in competition as of late on the road to Payback where all bets are out the window. However, they want to find out which one of them is the best and they can agree that they are not happy with the inclusion of Brie Bella in the match at Payback. That is why Charlotte is issuing a challenge to Brie for a match this weekend when WWE returns to Italy. If Charlotte defeats Brie then Brie will be taken out of the match at Payback. Brie would later accept the challenge on social media and would up the ante with a counter-stipulation: if Brie beats Charlotte in at WWE Italy this weekend then Charlotte must forego her rematch clause for the championship if Brie were to win and become the WWE Women's Champion at Payback in two weeks.
